Personally my favorite TLR is the Yashica D with Yashinon because it has a tessar and knob advance so it's one fewer thing to break compared to cranks. I've heard nothing but good things about the autocords, I think especially so because they have a really good film feed that keeps the film more flat than most TLRs where the film goes around the corner of the camera. Photography is a complex and fluid medium, and its many factors are not applied in simple sequence. Personally, I have settled on a blue dot 65mm f/3.5 as my 'normal' lens. The lens features four elements in three groups lens. Graham Patterson's excellent Mamiya TLR reference is where you should check first. This lens maintains a pleasing size relationship among objects at different depths. Also look for Ricoh diacord, and to save money on one of the mamiya tlrs look for the older ones called mamiyaflex instead of c220/c330. Mamiya 135mm f/4.5 TLR lens is suitable for portrait photography, commercial art photography, scientific documentation and industrial documentation. The yashica mat-LM, mat-EM and D are undervalued on eBay compared to the mat-124. The triplets are fine lenses with nice rendering and gorgeous bokeh but are lacking in contrast and resolution. Another good indication is the number of aperture blades, with 9 blades suggesting triplets and 5 blades suggesting tessar.
This is a good indication, though not 100% that it will have a tessar lens instead of a triplet.
Zero, before you start handling the lenses wash your hands. The usual disclaimer, use the lessons learned at your own risk.
The 65mm lens is a great lens, but it is not a symetrical design and is certainly not a Dagor. Here are my lessons learned from repairing a couple of used 'chrome' Mamiya TLR lenses. As for Mamiya TLRs, the only Heliar type lenses are the 105mm D and the 105mm DS (not the older plain 105mm design). When shopping for Yashicas look for the ones with Yashinon lens rather than yashikor. For the older photographers in our forum, that use or plan to use Mamiya TLR cameras and lenses.
